Chiropractic for Animals

Canine Chiropractic Treatment

The benefits of Chiropractic are not just available to humans – many of our four-legged friends can reap the rewards too! The musculo-skeletal and nervous systems of dogs and horses hold many similarities with those of humans. With additional training much of the theory and technique of human chiropractic is transferable to the animal world.

Chiropractic for animals is a unique discipline. It draws upon the functional theory and technique of human chiropractic as well as the science of traditional veterinary practise. Whilst it does not replace the need for traditional veterinary medicine, it  can be used as a complementary care system for your animal.

When might Chiropractic benefit my animal?

  • lameness
  • altered gait
  • abnormal weight-bearing
  • tenderness to touch
  • reluctance to allow grooming
  • reduced flexibility in movement

Animal Chiropractic – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chiropractic care?

A non-surgical, drug free therapy to improve the performance, health and wellbeing of your animal companion.

Is my Dog/Horse suitable for treatment?

Nearly all animals can benefit from treatment. Before treatment it is vital to gain consent from your vet to rule out the possibility of delivering care to animals which may not benefit from manual therapy. This is a legal requirement.

What to expect during treatment?

We will begin by asking about your animals health, history and any other factors relating to the complaint. A physical examination will follow – examination of the spine, pelvis, alignment, gait, posture, balance and general behavior.

We use gentle manipulative techniques to restore the correct functional movement of the musculo-skeletal system.

This does not cause your pet pain or distress.

Most animals remain relaxed and often appear to enjoy treatment.

What changes might I see following treatment?

Should I rest my animal after treatment?

It is advisable that your animal takes it easy for the rest of the day following treatment. Additional advice on a suitable exercise regime may be given to help complement the treatment and improve the outcome.

What kind of training does a Certified Animal Chiropractor have?

Our Chiropractors have gained a Masters Degree in human Chiropractic and then completed an intensive course for animal Chiropractic with the IAVC (International Academy of Veterinarian Chiropractic).

How long does treatment take?

Appointments usually last between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the issue being treated and the size of the animal.

How much does treatment cost?

We do not charge an initial consultation fee as we do with human our human patients – we find that animals struggle to fill out the paperwork and are reluctant to describe their symptoms adequately!

Dog treatments – £30

Horse treatment – £50

Discounts can be discussed when treating more than one animal in a visit.

Where are you based?

We have the ability to treat small animals on site at Riviera Wellbeing, 2-4 Gerston Road, Paignton. We have a dedicated animal room separate from our human treatment rooms, and are happy to treat dogs there.

For larger animals we will come to your yard/farm/stables by arrangement.

Animal Chiropractic and the law

In keeping with the Veterinary Act (1966), all Chiropractors (physiotherapists and osteopaths too) must hold suitable insurance and obtain permission to treat your animal from your veterinarian. Anyone who does not abide by this is operating illegally, and should not be trusted! Don’t entrust the care of your horse or dog to just anyone – make sure that your vet is happy for them to treat.

COVID-19
Status Update

Now that Covid safety restrictions have eased we are simply asking that all patients attending appointments feel fully well in themselves or take a lateral flow test (and test negative) before coming into the clinic.

If you have any doubts over your health we are happy to rearrange your appointment. We really appreciate 24 hours notice of this if at all possible.

In addition, we ask that (especially in busy periods) you continue to wear a face covering in the public areas of the clinic.

Thank you for continuing to help us protect our team and more vulnerable patients so that we can continue to look after you all.
