James Despard-Clark – Sports Massage and Exercise Rehabilatation
After graduating in 2008 with a BSc in Exercise Science and Health Rehabilitation, I worked within the NHS as a fitness instructor at Torbay Hospital. Supporting the physiotherapy department, I developed and ran exercise-based rehabilitation classes for patients recovering from cardiac and respiratory illness.
For the past 8 years I have worked as an exercise therapist for the Fire Fighters Charity at their residential rehabilitation centre near Exeter. Here I worked with clients suffering from musculo-skeletal and sports injuries, aiding in long-term condition management and post-orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation.
My experience in Sports Therapy and Injury Rehabilitation
Since 2014 I have been working in the well renowned, The Massage Clinic Exmouth. This has allowed me develop my soft tissue techniques working
with a huge variety of clientele, from the general public to Olympic level athletes.
I also had the opportunity of working in their second clinic based in CrossFit Pi one of the biggest CrossFit in the gyms in the south west, supporting their athletes in achieving their goals through soft tissue work and rehabilitation techniques.
In addition to my BSc in Exercise Science and Health Rehabilitation, I am qualified in RockTape Fascial Movement Taping, have a Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy and am a qualified in Pilates – Modified Pilates for Rehabilitation.
My life outside work
My love for exercise naturally flows over into my personal life, I have captained an 11-a-side football side in the South Devon league and enjoy playing 6-a-side football on week day evenings.
I attend the gym regularly (5 or 6 times per week) and have been a keen ‘cross-fitter’ for a number of years. CrossFit appeals to me because of its focus on mobility and improving movement patterns that have been almost forgotten amongst people outside of the professional sport world. This allows you to move more efficiently with increased bodily awareness. It has also opened my eyes to other disciplines including gymnastics and Olympic weight lifting.

A bespoke exercise programme from a trained professional in a class setting is difficult to find. Paul and the team at Riviera Wellbeing provide a super service and a really good exercise programme which is easy to follow and practice at home. This has helped me considerably and has enabled me to continue with progressing my exercise tolerance at the gym. Thank you team. ?Spinal Rehab Attendee 1
